Cultural Canada - Canada's Top 7 Museums for Travelers

by Robin Rowley

While Canada's new history and lack of recognized presence on the international art scene makes it difficult for the up and coming country to feature on such lists as TripAdvisor's recent "Top 10 Art Museums", Canada's a great place for culture hounds looking for interesting, unique, and contemporarily relevant art and exhibits.

Here's just a few of the great Canadian museums:

The Royal British Columbia Museum (Victoria, BC) puts the human and natural history of coastal British Columbia at the forefront. Visitors can visit a historic frontier main street, explore dioramas of coastal ecosystems, and learn about the First Nations people through artifacts and totems. The Royal BC Museum also hosts many of the world's finest traveling exhibits—like the Titanic exhibit, and the Mysteries of Egypt.

The Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia (Vancouver, BC) offers one of the most authentic looks at Native art in the world. The museum itself is built to resemble a traditional longhouse (with two more behind the back), and houses an incredible collection of Northwest Native art and totems.

Regarded by many as the best museum in the country, the Royal Ontario Museum (Toronto, Ontario) boasts endless galleries of as varied art and culture as dinosaurs, Chinese temple art, Roman statues, and Middle Eastern mosaics.

The Musée des Beaux-Arts (Montreal, Quebec) was Canada's first museum dedicated exclusively to the arts, and still one of it's finest. Artworks range from those produced in the Middle Ages right through the second half of the 20th century.

The Museum of Archaeology and History (Montreal, Quebec) offers up the history of the region in a strikingly modernistic structure at the edge of View-Montreal, the spot where the first European settlement put down roots. This museum, with its collections of the pottery shards, tools, glass jars, and pipes belonging to different settlers over the history of the region, is a great way to start reconciling the past and the present that seem to battle it out in this historically rich neighbourhood.

Ottawa's Canadian Museum of Civilization (Ottawa, Ontario) is a visually stunning museum designed by famous Native architect Douglas Cardinal. It offers the most comprehensive history of Canada of any of the museums, with distinct spaces reserved for exhibits marking the history of the First Nations, the Vikings who came to Canada, the whalers who established the country, and through the different settlers and communities. Also on offer are a Children's Museum, Postal Museum, and IMAX theatre.

The Musée de la Civilisation in Quebec (Quebec City, Quebec) is perhaps the most engrossing of any of the museums listed. Opened in 1988, this beautifully-designed museum boasts a spectacular setting and physical presence, perfectly suited to house the five permanent and six temporary exhibits it contains. With a broader focus than many other museums, the Musée de la Civilisation seems intent only on offering that which is interesting, relevant, and Canadian... From exhibits on the Vikings to the colour blue. Particularly memorable are the "Memoires" and "Encounter with the First Nations" exhibits, but all exhibits—both permanent and temporary—are informative, entertaining, and interactive, making for an altogether enthralling experience.
